ICT CA Part 3: Factors I would need to consider when buying a PC or Laptop for my course

Towards the end of August 2010, I received the exciting news that I would be starting the course of Applied Psychology in IADT. Having friends that had started college a year before myself, I knew that each and every one of them had their very own laptop to bring with them to college. After learning that I had got into this course, I decided to take it upon myself to save for a laptop. Before buying the laptop, I searched the net for useful information that would help me find the perfect laptop to use during my course.

I looked up information to find out how much memory on my laptop would be necessary for college, and what programmes I should have installed on it also. Other aspects like the weight of the laptop were important to.

Weight and size: As a student, I’d be carrying my laptop everywhere around college, such as the library and to classrooms. Another thing to take into account was that when buying a laptop, it would be my own personal laptop so I wanted to buy one that I could bring on holiday breaks, and use around my house. I found that a 15-inch laptop is doable on occasion, but a 13-inch laptop suited me best as I could also fit it into my handbag. Very compact and easy 2 carry and also particularly light.

Programmes: Microsoft Office is a must when purchasing a laptop for college. Programmes such as Photoshop can be bought and installed later.

Battery Life: 6 hours

Makes and Models: Compaq, Dell, HP, IBM, Sony or Toshiba
I decided to go with a Dell as their website was very easy to navigate around and I could find the best deals for the laptop I was looking for, with the biggest amount of GB’s and MB’s on the site. http://ireland.dell.com/

INSPIRON 11z

Hard Drive: 320GB    Memory: 4000MB

I believe that this size hard drive, and the amount of memory was the best choice for my laptop for college. I was also able to choose it in Pink with a click of the mouse using the Dell website!
Since buying this laptop, I have found that it suits me perfectly for college. Not only is it light and relatively small it also is full of memory with a big hard drive. Purchasing it online gave me an advantage as it was reduced by 400 euro as an online price. The battery life lasts me all day in college also if I charge it at home prior to coming in to IADT.
